2012: Start sewing for 100 Quilts for Kids 2012 now!

June 1-October 15, 2012!  I'm excited to say that I'm simplifying this year. Make a quilt or 2. Donate it to a child in need. Enjoy a blog hop with inspiration and mini prizes.  Link up on 1 day (October 15) to win one of 5 great prizes! Smile, knowing you used your skills for good. If you have any questions now, please email me at swimbikequilt at gmail dot com. Thanks!!!

2011: A special thanks to everyone who participated in 2011! Thank you for making and donating quilts, for donating prizes, for blogging and tweeting and talking to your friends about making quilts.  It is wonderful to be part of such a great effort!  This picture shows approximately 30 quilts donated by the DC Modern Quilt Guild and some of my local sewing friends. There were almost 200 quilts donated and linked up for prizes, and I am aware of many more that were quilted and donated.  For those of you who still have WIP quilts out there (I may have one in my living room right now), it is always a good time to donate a quilt. And the new year is a perfect time to finish up projects!  Please consider joining us in September/October 2012.

Overview of 2011 100 Quilts for Kids quilt drive
Please join the DC Modern Quilt Guild this fall in our second annual charity event, 100 Quilts for Kids. Last December, guild members and quilt bloggers generously (and quickly) made and donated over 130 quilts to children in our own communities during the holiday season. I was so inspired and impressed with the generosity and efforts of many of you, and was grateful to be a part of the tremendous potential for good that exists in the quilting community. This year, we hope to expand our efforts, inviting quilt bloggers and Modern Quilt Guilds to join with us.  Instead of frantically sewing charity quilts in November and December, this year's quilt drive will take place from September 15-October 15, after the lazy days of summer and before the rush of holiday preparations begins!

DETAILS AT A GLANCE:

Make a baby or toddler sized quilt--finish a WIP, try a new pattern, find a use for extra blocks from virtual bees, or start and finish a new quilt)

Donate your quilt(s) to an organization in your community--consider donating your quilt(s) to a local foster care program, domestic violence center, homeless shelter, children’s hospital, or local military family support organization, or to an organization such as Project Linus or Margaret’s Hope Chest

Donate your quilt(s) from September 15-October 14, 2011:  Let us know you donated your quilt (and where you donated it) by sharing a link to a blog post or picture on flickr at one of two linky parties. (You can also email me a picture of the finished quilt and I will link up for you).

100 Quilts Sponsors!
Prizes!  To encourage quilters to participate, and to say "thank you," there will be goody bags and prizes associated with each link-up party. We will also randomly draw numbers for a list of grand prizes on October 15, here, at Swim, Bike, Quilt. New this year, there will be a reader's choice prize: I will pick my ten favorite quilts, readers get to vote, and whoever wins will get a prize. And it will be a good one :)

Sponsors Needed: If you are interested in sponsoring the event/donating a fabric or quilting related prize, please contact me by October 10, 2011 at swimbikequilt at gmail dot com.

Information on 100 Quilts for Kids in 2010:
Aunt Spicy and I were thrilled to spearhead 100 Quilts for Christmas in November and December 2010. Our local guild, the DC Modern Quilt Guild, teamed up with a local LDS congregation to make and donate 43 baby and toddler size quilts to the Alexandria Office on Women.  We were inspired and impressed with the efforts and generosity of others, and were grateful to help harness the terrific potential for good in the online quilting community by encouraging quilters to make baby (or slightly bigger) quilts for children in their own communities. Overall, over 130 quilts were donated to children in need.

Aunt Spicy and I wanted to thank everyone for participating, and highlight a few people who donated prizes or really ran with the idea and made it their own:
