WIP Wednesday: The Metro Quilt

Blue and Yellow Lines[J, this quilt is (or rather, will be) for you. I love you. I hope you have the happiest of birthdays!!!]

As soon as I saw Oh Fransson's Tokyo Subway map, I knew I would be making a DC Metro map at some point.  Over the weekend, I saw Liz's DC Metro Map quilt, and I caught the bug. Luckily for me, Dana caught it too, and she did the hard part (making a metro grid) and then shared it with me. Thanks, Dana. Here are my first two blocks--I didn't think I would pick up half square triangles again for a long time after a few of those Summer Sampler blocks. I was wrong.

Note: I realize the irony of posting a project involving Metro the day after one of the worst commutes the DC area has seen in some time. I was glad I didn't have to go anywhere, except the pool :) Mr. L. and I jumped off the diving board about one hundred times.  We actually didn't feel the earthquake at all, but everyone else sure did. It happened in the three minutes we were driving home from a friend's house. Strange, eh? And just Friday, during a colossal thunder storm, I assured my son that there were no earthquakes in Virginia. Oops.

  5. I too saw the Tokyo Subway Map and loved it. I can't wait to see how yours looks when finished! I live in Delaware and felt every shake rattle and rumble of that earthquake. Was a bit scary!

  6. I love the beginning of your Metro map quilt. I love maps, and the idea of a map quilt is especially cool. That is so funny and ironic that you had just had a discussion about earthquakes with your son and then we had this rare earthquake. I live in Raleigh, and I totally missed the earthquake moment. I think it was because I was outside at the time. My husband was inside the house and he totally felt it. I feel kind of bummed that I missed it.

  8. Love the idea of the metro quilt! My husband was stuck on the metro for three hours yesterday after the earthquake, so it might be too soon for him to think about a metro quilt! :)

My boys and I were out for a walk and we didn't feel it either which was perfectly fine with me! Glad your family is okay!

  9. How about a subway/bus map quilt along? We could all do our own cities...why don't you lead it (and give some advice!). I would want to do the Boston area.

  10. I've long wanted to make a metro quilt for my dad (I grew up in DC). If it's possible to share the grid, could you email it to me? If not, I understand. Thank you!

  11. I have a SoCal friend who moved to CT this spring, he was grousing that he thought he traded earthquakes for winter weather with his move, but apparently, he has to deal with earthquakes & winter weather in CT, and would rather move back to SoCal, lol!
