On Saturday night, I watched a fascinating special on CNN about American Innovation while I ran on the treadmill at the gym. I gained two interesting insights. The first is that great innovators usually possess two qualities, energy and honesty, especially the ability to be honest with themselves. The second, and the one most relevant to my weekend sewing is that great innovators learn how to fail efficiently.
This was supposed to be a bag for me, to hold all of my stuff for church: piano books, coloring books and treats for the kids, the occasional Buzz Lightyear for the baby... things to keep everyone on the quiet side during the worship service. Did I mention that I sewed it up LATE at night? I cut the bag out, and then thought, "this will be perfect!" Well, at least the fabric is perfect: Jessica Jones home dec (c.2007) and Denyse Schmidt's new Picnic and Fairgrounds for the lining. Did I mention that the strap is twisted and I sewed in a magnetic closure wrong? Oh, it made me laugh. I brought it to church yesterday anyway, just because. I guess blogging about it doesn't add to the "fail efficiently part" but at least I learned what NOT to do. (note: someone on flickr suggested that it was just a trial run. I like that!)

Darling! And love the fabric. Live & Learn, huh? CUTE pic of the little one, too!!
ReplyDeleteWell that little one sure doesn't seem to mind a little twist in the bag! Adorable, the bag and the little one :)
ReplyDeleteYou are right, the fabric is perfect ... and yes, as far as failing goes, sometimes a failure can just be disguised as a "design decision" ... ;-) ... well maybe not with a bag but with a quilt.
ReplyDeleteI love the fabric you used and the little model is very cute too. I agree that the "failures" make us learn what not to do next time. And sewing so late doesn't always work out - I've realized that too!! Ha-ha! Great post!
ReplyDeletethis prints look great together. late night sewing, um, not so much...for me at least. :)
ReplyDeleteWe have all sewn something on backwards -- oh well! The fabric is awesome though :)
ReplyDeleteI LOVE the fabrics you chose...how cute to see it being used already! :-)
ReplyDeleteThose fabrics look great together. The next one you make will be perfect. I have a no crafting after 9pm rule. Anything I do after that usually ends up going down the tubes...
ReplyDeleteI LOVE the fabrics you chose! Yummy! :) Thanks for linking up to {Sew} Modern Monday and have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteLearning to fail is an important life lesson. We have to let ourselves fail so we can be free to explore. Personally, I have ALWAYS learned so much more from my failures/mistakes than from my successes.
ReplyDeleteAnd your work is beautiful.
