Only in DC: Biking to Work with the Secetary of Tranportation & the Secret Service

This morning, I put my kids in the trailer and pedaled over to the park. My husband, on the other hand, rode into work with the Secretary of Transportation. (Secretary LaHood is wearing the white t-shirt, J is the one to his left in a black shirt.) J has been riding his bike to work for a few years now.  Their office has a bike commuter e-mail group they use to discuss bike issues (routes to work, road closures, bike facilities, etc.).
Well, it turns out the Secretary of Transportation learned about their little group.  He decided to ride his bike to work and invited them to join him.  They rode from the Washington Monument to the Department of Transportation--the best part -- they were escorted by Secret Service agents, some on bike, others in large, black SUVs.  Those in the SUVs went ahead of their group and blocked every intersection. (Secretary LaHood in white, J in the red & black helmet and black shirt, and on the far left in the Washington Monument picture).
Sometimes, living near DC makes me smile!

  5. Crazy, I just found your blog...Ray LaHood is my husband's cousin! He was even named after my husband's grandfather. :) I had no idea he was biking to work. Cool!

Love the quilts, too! Great blog!

  6. fun pictures and great story!
We live a little too far to ride to DC (30 min by metro) but we have found some great bike trail along the creek, it does go all the way to downtown, I might have to try, but without the kids!
